REGY 24 NO 161
GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 18th. October, 1916.
Sir,
I have had under careful consideration your Confident -ial Despatch of the 9th. August on the subject of the salary attaching to the post of Land Officer.
In this Colony where transactions in land are
exceedingly numerous and where land is of enormous value
-
I may
mention here that land in the City of Victoria has changed hands
not long ago at a price representing a value of no less than
£250,000 an acre the appointment of Land Officer is such an
important one that I cannot but regard the salary suggested by me
in my Despatch No. 232 of 7th. June as the minimum that can
reasonably be assigned to the post. The salary suggested by you is
a very slight improvement on the existing salary and I should be
glad therefore if you could see your way to approve the increase
suggested by me.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
ANDRE BONAR LAV, M.P.,
